TOURISM IN ITALY’S MOST GORGEOUS VILLAGES
We want to lead you to the fascination of a hidden Italy. Looking for villages of the Middle Ages in our land, rich in history and culture, where time seems to have stopped. Let us mention to you some that you cannot possibly miss:
- Gradara: an ancient medieval village that has reached our age intact, with its enceinte and castle, the setting of the tragic romance of Paolo and Francesca told by Dante, Petrarca, Boccaccio and D’Annunzio.
- Corinaldo: a perfect set for a cloak-and-dagger film. Built in a strategic position between the March of Ancona and the Urbino State, the symbol of the village is its imposing enceinte - which has remained practically intact since the XV century, and that can be wended along its whole length.
- Corbordolo: a little village belonging to another age, it still boasts a tower and the ancient castle walls. Here Giovanni Santi, the father of Raffaello Sanzio, was born. In the hamlet called Morcila, Villa Albeni, a patrician countryside home, and the Romanic– Gothic church of Santa Maria, deserve a visit.
- San Leo: amid Romanic churches and palaces of the Renaissance, the 600-metre-high fortress dominates the Marecchia valley. The Romanic nucleus of the village, parish church, cathedral and tower confront in Dante Alighieri Square with the Renaissance buildings, such as the della Rovere palace, the namesake residence of these counts.
